CORFU TOWN: THEMED HISTORICAL EXPLORATION OF THE TOWN, BY WAY OF ITS FORTRESSES AND DEFENSIVE WALLS

The history of Corfu Town is the history of its defences. Boasting not just one but two medieval fortresses, as well as extensive walls and bastions, the town was the key to the central Mediterranean for all the military forces who desired control over the area. Corfu Town never fell to any opposing army, changes in rulership only resulting from treaty agreements. The defences that ensured its safety for centuries are long gone, but many surprisingly intact sections are still today incorporated into the modern town. This tour takes you on a circuit of the defensive footprint, pointing out remaining sections and relating their history and role. At the same time, it enables you to visit some of the lesser known and more picturesque neighbourhoods of the Historic Centre.

This self-guided audio tour is available to walk at anytime. Stop when or wherever you wish to. If you visit one of the fortresses, museums, or stop for a drink or a meal, we advise that you turn off your GPS to prolong your mobile device's battery. 

NOTE: This tour can be accessed from San Rocco, and from the New Port where cruise ships arrive. Just follow the orange route to get to the starting point.
